Why Choose Methodist Dallas for Cardiology

At Methodist Dallas Medical Center, we specialize in diagnosing and treating all conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. You will have access to the expertise of our dedicated team. Highlights of our program include:

  • STEMI accreditation: Methodist Dallas is accredited as a STEMI Heart Attack Receiving Center by the American Heart Association (AHA). This means our team is able to respond to heart attacks in a timely manner, when every minute counts.
  • Primary Heart Attack Center (PHAC): The Sam & Anne Kesner Heart Center at Methodist Dallas is certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Heart Attack Center (PHAC). Our specialists offer advanced heart care and comprehensive cardiology services using a patient-centered approach.
  • Streamlined services: At our centralized, hospital-based cardiac clinic, we provide diagnostic tests, treatments, and vascular surgery. A dedicated pharmacist is also available to assist with medication management. This convenient clinic allows you to get the care you need all in one place, without having to travel to different locations.
  • Advanced technology: Our facility features two cardiac catheterization (cardiac cath) labs, where we perform minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures. In our two electrophysiology (EP) labs, we create detailed images of the heart. We use this technology to assist diagnosis and offer more effective treatments.

Cardiovascular Conditions We Treat

Our team has experience treating a range of heart and vascular disorders, from common to complex. We specialize in structural heart issues, a group of conditions that affect the valves, chambers, walls, or the heart muscle itself. We treat those that are congenital (present at birth) and those that develop over time, including:

  • Cardiomyopathy, an umbrella term for several conditions that affect the heart muscle and make it difficult for the heart to pump blood throughout the body
  • Heart valve diseases, which affect how the heart’s valves pump blood through the heart

We are also skilled at diagnosing and treating:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AFib) and other types of arrythmias (irregular heartbeat)
  • Aortic aneurysm, when a bulge develops in the aorta (the main vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body)
  • Coronary artery disease, or CAD, when plaque buildup in the vessels that carry blood to the heart
  • Heart failure, when the heart is unable to pump blood through the body effectively
  • Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, a narrowing of the vessels that carry blood away from the heart

Diagnostic Procedures We Offer

At Methodist Dallas, we know that an accurate diagnosis enables us to deliver the most effective and personalized treatments. Our experienced cardiologists combine advanced technology with extensive expertise to gain a comprehensive understanding of your heart and vascular health.

Depending on several factors, your care team may recommend:

  • 3D cardiac mapping and navigation: We offer these advanced tests that track electrical signals in the heart to precisely evaluate arrythmias. This helps us pinpoint the exact location of abnormal heart tissue.
  • Angiogram: An angiogram uses X-rays to create pictures of your heart and blood vessels.
  • Diagnostic cardiac cath procedures: To diagnose and evaluate heart disease, your doctor guides a thin tube to your heart through a small incision in your wrist or groin. The catheter (tube) has a camera that allows doctors to see any blocked or abnormal blood vessels.
  • Doppler ultrasound: Doppler ultrasound is an imaging study that tracks blood flood flow through the heart and vessels.
  • Echocardiogram (echo): This test uses ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) to produce images of your heart. An echo can show how the valves and heart muscles work during physical activity and when you’re at rest.
  • Electrophysiology tests: These tests evaluate the electrical activity of the heart. They can detect arrhythmias and help determine where the irregularity originates.
  • Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT): Also called myocardial perfusion, this scan produces images of your heart and blood vessels. Your doctor injects a safe, radioactive tracer through an IV. They use a special camera to look at your heart.
  • Tilt-table testing: While you recline on a special bed, your doctor tilts the bed to different angles and monitors your blood pressure. These tests help determine the cause of fainting spells, which can result from heart arrhythmias.

Cardiovascular Treatments We Offer

You can trust the team of heart specialists at Methodist Dallas to provide you with the most advanced treatments using innovative technology. We offer many treatments in our specialized cardiac cath labs.

The cardiac catheterization techniques we offer are minimally invasive, meaning they require small incisions and involve less recovery time than traditional (open) procedures. The vascular specialists at Methodist Dallas also offer several vascular surgery procedures in our cath labs.

Some of the most common treatments we offer include:

  • Angioplasty and stenting: We perform many of these procedures in our cardiac cath lab. The techniques open narrowed blood vessels to help restore blood flow and prevent complications. We also insert stents to support keeping the blood vessels open.
  • Cardiac ablation (electrocautery): These procedures modify an irregular heartbeat by targeting and destroying abnormal heart tissue.
  • Implantable defibrillators and pacemakers: We offer implantablecardiac devices to help treat AFib and other types of irregular heartbeat. We place these devices under your skin. They include wires that extend to your heart and correct your heart’s rhythm. They can also help people with congestive heart failure by increasing blood flow.
  • Impella® Heart Pump: We specialize in implanting this small heart pump, which helps the heart to recover following a cardiac event.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): Our team has specialized expertise performing TAVR, an advanced technique to treat heart valve disease.
  • WATCHMANTM Implant: We offer this heart implant that prevents blood clots associated with AFib. The device helps reduce the risk of stroke that can result from AFib.

STEMI accreditation from the American Heart Association

Methodist Dallas is an accredited STEMI Heart Attack Receiving Center, indicating our ability to provide care during cardiac emergencies. STEMI stands for ST-elevation myocardial infarction. It is the most dangerous type of heart attack and results from a fully blocked coronary artery.

To be eligible for STEMI certification, an emergency team must respond to STEMI in under 90 minutes. Our team responds to this serious condition quickly to provide treatments that may potentially save lives.
