Women’s Health Conditions We Treat
At Methodist Charlton, we support you through every stage of life, from
pre-adolescence to post-menopause. Our team is experienced in diagnosing
and treating conditions that affect women’s health.
Some of the most common conditions we treat include:
-
Breast cancer: A group of cancers that develop in the breast tissue. They may affect one
or both breasts.
-
Endometriosis: A disorder that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus
grows outside the uterus. This condition can be painful and may affect
fertility.
-
Gynecological cancer: A group of cancers that develop in the female reproductive organs, including
the cervix, ovaries, uterus, and vagina.
-
Menstrual disorders: A group of conditions that cause abnormalities in your menstrual cycle.
You may experience irregular, heavy, missed, or painful periods.
-
Pelvic pain: A chronic and sometimes severe symptom that occurs with certain conditions,
such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids.
-
Pelvic floor disorders: A group of conditions caused by weak, overactive, or imbalanced pelvic
muscles. These disorders may include bladder and bowel incontinence, urinary
dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, and painful intercourse.
-
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Infections that are spread by sexual activity. Some examples of STDs include
human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis, and herpes.
-
Uterine dehiscence: A condition that occurs when a previous scar in the uterus partially separates
from the surrounding tissue. While this often occurs without any symptoms,
it may cause abdominal pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
-
Vaginal infections: These infections develop independent of sexual activity. Examples of vaginal
infections include yeast infections and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

The Lymphedema and Pelvic Floor Clinic at Methodist Charlton
Your pelvic floor supports the organs in the pelvis, including the bladder,
uterus, and bowel. When it becomes weakened or damaged, it can affect
how your pelvic organs function. We offer pelvic floor therapy to help
you strengthen your muscles, restore function, and manage pain.
You may benefit from pelvic floor therapy if you experience:
- Complications after giving birth
- Lymphedema, a build-up of fluid in the body associated with breast cancer
treatment, especially after lymph node removal or radiation therapy
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Pain and discomfort during pregnancy
- Pelvic pain or pelvic floor disorders, including bladder and bowel incontinence,
urinary dysfunction, constipation, and pelvic organ prolapse
- Uterine dehiscence
Robotic-Assisted Gynecologic Surgery
At Methodist Charlton, we use the da Vinci Surgical System to perform operations
that treat gynecological conditions. Robotic-assisted techniques are minimally
invasive. This means they use smaller incisions to promote quicker recovery,
a decreased risk of complications, and reduced time in the hospital.
We most commonly use robotic assistance to perform:
-
Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
-
Myomectomy (removal of fibroids or noncancerous growths in the uterus)
- Oophorectomy (removal of one or both ovaries)
-
Sacrocolpoplexy (restoration of the normal position of the pelvic organs)
