Cardiovascular Conditions We Treat

At Methodist Charlton, we work together to treat conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. Some of the most common cardiovascular conditions we treat include:

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), including atrial fibrillation (AFib) and tachycardia
  • Cardiomyopathy, a condition that weakens the heart muscles and makes it difficult for them to pump blood
  • Congestive heart failure, occurs when your heart can’t pump enough blood through the body
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD), occurs when the blood vessels that bring blood to the heart become narrowed or blocked
  • Heart attack, including ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)
  • Heart valve disease, occurs when one or more of the heart’s valves don’t work well enough to pump blood in one direction through the heart
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD), occurs when the blood vessels that bring blood from the heart to other areas of the body become narrowed or blocked
  • Stroke, when blood supply to the brain is reduced or completely blocked

Diagnostic Procedures We Offer

We assess your symptoms and make a diagnosis using minimally invasive and noninvasive diagnostic procedures.

Your doctor may perform a physical exam and prescribe blood tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests, including:

  • Angiogram: A test that uses dye and imaging scans to visualize how well blood flows through your blood vessels and heart. It helps diagnose narrowing or blockages of the blood vessels.
  • Echocardiogram: A test using ultrasound (sound waves) to create an image of your heart. It allows your doctor to see how well blood flows through the heart and its valves.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG): A test performed to analyze the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity and diagnose abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Stress tests: This supervised test helps your doctor understand how well your heart pumps blood throughout your body when exercising.

Cardiovascular Treatments We Offer

At Methodist Charlton, we offer treatment options for cardiovascular conditions. Your doctor creates your treatment plan based on your symptoms and health history.

Treatments we provide include:

  • Preventive care: We work with you to help improve your heart health and lower your risk of heart disease. We create a preventive care plan based on your medical history and current health needs.
  • Medication: Doctors at Methodist Charlton may prescribe many different types of medication to help treat heart conditions. We monitor your progress and adjust your treatment as needed to help provide you with the most effective results possible.
  • Interventional procedures: Surgeons perform catheter-guided, minimally invasive procedures, including angioplasty and stenting. When possible, we insert the catheter through the wrist, as opposed to the groin, to try to minimize pain.
  • Implantable devices: We use many devices, including the Impella® Heart Pump, and CardioMEMS™ Heart Failure (HF) System, to monitor and help regulate your heartbeat.
  • Open heart surgery: Surgeons at Methodist Charlton perform open heart surgery for complex conditions, when minimally invasive methods can’t be used.

Advanced Interventional Techniques for Diagnosis and Treatment

Interventional cardiologists use minimally invasive procedures to provide you with many benefits, compared to open surgical techniques. These techniques use smaller incisions which help reduce pain, lower the risk of complications, and speed up recovery.

From chronic coronary artery disease to sudden heart attack, we help you get back to your daily life activities. We provide high-quality care, while prioritizing your safety and comfort.
