What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor management is offered through the physical medicine department. Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized, non-invasive treatment for dysfunction involving the pelvic floor muscles, nerves, and connective tissues.

We treat conditions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, chronic constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, or pain (low back pain, pelvic pain). It can also be beneficial for those recovering from pregnancy or birth trauma, as well as from changes after abdominal/pelvic surgery and pelvic radiation therapy. We provide one-on-one care and personalized treatment programs in a comfortable environment. We take a whole-body approach and teach you strategies to help you gain confidence and independence with managing symptoms, improved movement, and quality of life.

What are the therapists' services, techniques, & treatment approach?

The goal of treatment is to coach patients towards restoring independence with managing their symptoms by targeting functional core muscles, including the pelvic floor muscles, in order to optimize function and alleviate symptoms.

The first session of therapy starts with an evaluation in which the patient shares their story/history and the therapist evaluates the patient’s symptoms, as well as an assessment of the musculoskeletal system, including the function of muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. The clinician incorporates a biopsychosocial approach to help the person as a whole, including education on nervous system regulation management, improvement of gastrointestinal motility, and improvement of sleep hygiene.

Treatments may include core muscle coordination, strengthening, and relaxation exercises, neuromuscular re-education, manual therapy techniques, and electrical stimulation, all utilized for empowering patients.

Sessions are scheduled based on individual patient needs and will vary from patient to patient. Sessions can vary from three times a week to once a week and last 60 minutes.

How can therapy help someone?

Sessions are patient-centered/driven with clinicians serving as a coach to help patients become independent with managing their symptoms. Clinician evaluates muscle strength, coordination, breathing patterns, and movement patterns, then builds a customized program to improve core control, bladder/bowel habits, and confidence.

  • Post-surgical recovery: restores mobility, including scar tissue mobility, and improves core stability with tailored therapeutic programs.
  • Chronic pain: gentle manual therapy, myofascial release, trigger point techniques, and neuromuscular re-education to relieve pain and restore function.
  • Nerve-related symptoms: desensitization, guided movement, and education to support nerve recovery and reduce discomfort.
