Lung Nodule Clinic

Coordinated care for lung nodules

While most lung nodules aren’t cancer, they deserve expert evaluation and follow-up. Our Lung Nodule Clinic provides expedited, coordinated care when a lung nodule is found on routine imaging or a lung cancer screening.

Lung nodules are commonly seen in people who have a chest X-ray or CT scan. According to the American Thoracic Society, nodules are found in as many as half of adults who have one of these imaging tests. These spots or shadows are an area in the lungs that is denser than the surrounding tissue. They are small and range from 3 millimeters to 30 millimeters in size.

Lung nodule causes

There are many non-cancerous causes of lung nodules, such as environmental exposure to infectious organisms that cause scarring in the lungs. Lung nodules are more common in parts of the country where fungal elements are common in the soil.

While most nodules are benign, a small percentage are early lung cancer. The larger a lung nodule, the more likely it is to be cancer.
