PGY1 Dallas Pharmacy Residency

A message from our PGY1 Program Director:

Thank you for your interest in the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, one of the largest and longest-standing hospitals in Dallas, Texas.

As a pharmacy resident at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, you will be part of a department that puts patient care as our number one priority. Our dedicated staff has an excellent rapport with medical and nursing personnel and is highly committed to providing quality medication-related care for our patients. The purpose of our program is to build on the resident's Doctor of Pharmacy education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for the care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Additionally, we hope to develop the skillset required for board certification and postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training.

General Information

Clinical rotations in the 12-month, hospital-based Pharmacy Residency Program at Methodist Dallas are offered in a variety of clinical areas. The resident's responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide optimal patient care
  • Providing pharmacotherapy management including pharmacokinetics consults
  • Educating the interdisciplinary team on drug therapy

Other responsibilities include:

  • Completion of a major research project that is presented at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and regional residency conference, Alcalde
  • Completion of a medication utilization evaluation
  • Presenting various journal clubs, case presentations, and in-services
  • Opportunity to attain a teaching certificate through University of North Texas College of Pharmacy

As a pharmacy resident you are afforded the opportunity to be a member of the hospital's pharmacy staff and serve as a pharmacist in the department. Additionally, residents are expected to be involved with various hospital committees including, but not limited to, P&T and Quality & Safety committees.

Required Rotations

  • Internal medicine I and II
  • Infectious diseases
  • Medical critical care
  • Surgical/trauma critical care
  • Ambulatory care - cardiology
  • Advance clinical pharmacy
  • Drug information (longitudinal)
  • Pharmacy administration (longitudinal)
  • Pharmacy practice - staffing (longitudinal)

Elective Rotations (residents will select 3)

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Informatics
  • Neuro Critical Care
  • Pharmacy Administration
  • Solid Organ Transplant (kidney or liver)
  • Transitions of Care

Application Process

In order to be considered for the residency program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, you must complete each of the following steps:

  1. Register for the ASHP Resident Matching Program
  2. Submit the following on Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS):
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Letter of intent
  • Three references (using the PhORCAS reference template)
  • An official copy of the college of pharmacy transcript

Requirements for Acceptance

  • Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Full eligibility for Texas licensure
  • Eligibility for employment at Methodist Dallas Medical Center
  • Participation in the residency matching program
  • On-site interview
