Stroke Conditions We Treat

Strokes occur when the brain doesn’t receive enough blood or when there is bleeding inside the brain. Neurologists and neurosurgeons at Methodist Richardson treat every kind of stroke, including complex and severe strokes.

Types of strokes we treat include:

  • Embolic ischemic stroke: This type of stroke happens when a blood clot from another part of the body breaks off and travels to the brain.
  • Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) stroke: A stroke resulting from a bleeding or leaking blood vessel in the brain.
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) stroke: This type of stroke occurs when there is bleeding in the space between the brain and the thin tissue layer that surrounds it.
  • Thrombotic ischemic stroke: A type of stroke caused by a blood clot that forms in one of the brain’s blood vessels.
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA): These types of strokes are often described as temporary or “mini” because they tend to resolve on their own. TIAs occur when a blocked blood vessel causes temporary loss of blood flow to the brain. A TIA usually resolves on its own, when the blood clot dislodges and restores blood flow.

Diagnostic Procedures We Offer

Our neurology team carefully evaluates your symptoms and uses imaging techniques to determine the type of stroke and where it occurred. Your doctors may use multiple imaging tests to make a diagnosis.

Imaging scans we use include:

  • CT (computed tomography) scan: These scans use multiple X-rays to create detailed images of the blood vessels in the brain. Doctors use CT scans to determine whether a stroke may be caused by a blocked blood vessel or a bleeding one.
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): These scans use repetitive magnetic pulses to create detailed images of the blood vessels in the brain. Doctors use MRI scans to help identify very small abnormalities and determine the cause of a stroke.

Stroke Treatments We Offer

The team of neurologists and stroke specialists at Methodist Richardson uses minimally invasive interventional techniques to treat all types of strokes.

Stroke treatments we offer include:

  • Endovascular thrombectomy: A technique used to treat ischemic strokes (resulting from a blocked blood vessel). During this procedure, your surgeon guides a thin, flexible tube (called a catheter) through an artery in the groin or the wrist. Once they arrive at the blocked artery, they use a small tool to help remove the blood clot and restore normal blood flow.
  • Angioplasty and stenting: Neurosurgeons may perform these procedures after treating a stroke. During these procedures, your surgeon places and inflates a tiny balloon in the affected blood vessel to widen it. Then, they place a small stent to help keep the blood vessel open and avoid future narrowing or blockage.
  • Endovascular coiling: A surgical technique used to treat hemorrhagic strokes (resulting from a blood vessel that ruptures and bleeds). During this procedure, your surgeon guides a small, thin wire to the affected blood vessel through a catheter. They insert the wire so it coils inside the ruptured or bulging area of the blood vessel. The coil helps to stop the bleeding and restore normal blood flow to the brain.

Recognized Comprehensive Stroke Care from DNV Healthcare

Methodist Richardson is a DNV Healthcare-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. This designation highlights our ability to identify and treat complex strokes requiring intensive care. Our neurology and stroke team provides advanced diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive treatment procedures.

Advanced stroke care expands outside of our neurology department. Our entire hospital nursing staff — across all departments — undergoes training to recognize the signs of a stroke. Recognizing a stroke early is critical to reducing the risk of permanent damage and improving the chances of recovery.
