In 1975, Methodist Charlton opened its doors to serve the growing communities
of Southern Dallas County. It proved to be an ideal location for Methodist
to establish a Family Medicine Residency Program. The residency was first
accredited by the ACGME in 1980 by Dr. Frank Crawford and Dr. Allen Fain.
Since its inception, the program has been the
only residency program at what is now Methodist Charlton Medical Center.
Core lectures by faculty, specialists, and outside speakers are provided to residents daily in the Crawford Learning Center at Methodist Charlton. Wednesday afternoons can include procedure workshops on topics such as joint injections, contraceptive management, and dermatologic and cosmetic procedures. Every July the upper-level residents discuss common inpatient conditions and emergencies for our interns. We also have a series presented throughout the year, including HIV care, obesity, practice management/quality improvement, integrative medicine, and much more!
Residents start preparing for their board examinations during their first year. This ongoing preparation has resulted in a 100 percent pass rate of those taking exams immediately after graduating for the past 25 years.
Every February, our senior residents participate in an established medical mission to Guatemala, led by Dr. Thomas Shima and other program faculty. Methodist recognizes the importance for residents to experience healthcare from a global perspective and covers resident travel expenses.
Residents work with our geriatrician in an outpatient clinic specifically for the older patient. This occurs during the geriatric rotation, with a primary focus on memory loss pharmacotherapy, limitations in the elderly, and community resources. Residents also actively involved with "Generations", which provides health and education events for adults 55 and older.
On Friday mornings our residents work collaboratively with Dr. Daniel Pearson, a Psychiatrist on our faculty. Dr. Pearson consults and advises on the care and management of our patients with mental health challenges.
The cornerstone of our residency program is ensuring our patients understand their chronic health problems and have reliable access to medications for better control of their diabetes and blood pressure. Our clinical pharmacist bridges the gap and spends valuable time with our patients to help them meet their goals and become more successful in the long term.
Every Tuesday morning our MSK clinic is supervised by Dr. Garff, our Sports Medicine faculty. The clinic utilizes POCUS and includes joint and tendon injections besides caring for musculoskeletal injuries.
