Skin and soft tissue diseases are infections that involve the outer layers
of the skin and soft tissues located beneath it. There are a wide range
of connective tissue diseases, resulting in varying symptoms and treatment
modalities. When looking at skin and connective tissue diseases, it is
important to note that they are generally caused by viruses, bacteria,
and fungi that enter the body at an open wound, such as a cut, scrape,
bite, or other area where the skin has been broken.

In some cases, skin and tissue infections are caused by bacteria that live
inside the body. When this happens, these infections usually start in
the deeper tissues, such as muscle and the tissue that forms ligaments,
tendons, and other structures (called the connective tissue). Many skin
and tissue diseases display varying symptoms in other parts of the body,
making them difficult to diagnose at first.

Our Process

When a patient comes to Surgical Associates of Mansfield with a skin or
soft tissue disease, we will begin by assessing the severity and location
of the infection and the patient’s current medical state. Infections
can either be categorized as uncomplicated (simple), complicated (necrotizing
or nonnecrotizing), or as suppurative or nonsuppurative. There are many
different causes of these types of infections, but many start as a staph
infection. For patients with simple infections, they may be localized
and treated relatively quickly.

• Skin Cancer – There are several different types of skin cancer, including basal cell
  cancer, melanoma, and squamous cell skin carcinoma,
• Lipoma – A fatty lump typically located between the skin and muscle layer
• Cysts – Noncancerous, sac-like structures that are filled with fluid or a gaseous material
• Tumors – A swelling due to abnormal growth of tissue. Tumors can be both benign
  and malignant
