About Tarek Sawas, MD, MPH, FASGE

Tarek Sawas, MD, MPH, FASGE, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified gastroenterologist at Methodist Gastroenterology – Richardson. He specializes in therapeutic endoscopy to diagnose and treat digestive disorders of the bile ducts, colon, esophagus, and pancreas.

Dr. Sawas emphasizes minimally invasive options, such as endoscopy, whenever possible. Compared to traditional open surgery methods, endoscopy can help patients recover faster and maintain their quality of life.

Dr. Sawas is an expert in advanced endoscopic techniques, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). ERCP is used to diagnose and treat bile duct and pancreatic conditions. He also has expertise in interventional endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). EUS enables detailed imaging and precision in procedures such as biopsy.

Dr. Sawas takes a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care. He is dedicated to ensuring patients understand their condition and all their treatment options. He chose a career in medicine to make a meaningful and lasting difference in people’s lives. Through expert, empathetic care, he helps patients navigate difficult diagnoses with confidence.

Teaching and research are also important to Dr. Sawas. He served as the program director of the advanced endoscopy fellowship program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He has been part of the American Gastroenterology Association guidelines panel and presented lectures across the country. He has published close to 80 papers in top peer-reviewed journals such as American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology, and Journal of Surgical Oncology. He serves as a reviewer for multiple journals. Dr. Sawas has also written books and book chapters on gastroenterology and endoscopy.

Outside of providing patient care, teaching, and research, Dr. Sawas enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and spending time with his family.
