Don’t Wait to Seek the Care You Need
If left untreated, hand injuries can get worse over time. While many injuries
will heal on their own, it’s up to you to monitor the symptoms and
seek care when warning signs appear. Even a small cut has the potential
to become infected and cause extensive damage to the hand.
Symptoms of a serious hand injury that requires treatment include:
- Severe Bleeding
- Numb, tingling sensations
- Difficulty moving the hand
- Dislocated fingers or wrist
- Exposed bone, tendon, veins, or arteries
Don’t ignore these or other serious signs of a severe hand injury.
Schedule an appointment with a medical professional as soon as possible
to receive the care you need.
Overuse Injuries
Not all hand injuries are caused by a single event. Many injuries develop
slowly over time due to overuse and repetitive activity. Some examples include:
-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – A common chronic condition caused by overuse. This occurs when pressure
is put on the median nerve in the wrist, resulting in pain, tingling,
numbness, and swelling. -
Tendonitis – Tears in the tendons of the hand lead to pain and tenderness in the wrist.
You may also have a difficult time moving the hand or wrist. -
De Quervain’s Disease – The tendons covering the thumb side of the wrist can become inflamed.
If the swelling is bad enough, it can become extremely difficult to move
the thumb without pain.
Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates provides treatments for these
and other conditions of the hand.
