Kidney & Pancreas Transplantation

Kidney & Pancreas Transplantation

World-class clinical expertise with a personal touch

Methodist Dallas has been doing kidney transplants for more than three
decades. To date, we have performed over 2,600 kidney transplants with
outcomes that meet or exceed national averages. At Methodist, experienced
surgeons, not those in training, will perform your surgery thus decreasing
the complication rate.

Kidney Transplant

There are many causes of kidney failure, but the leading ones are diabetes
and hypertension. No matter the cause, you may be a candidate if your
creatinine clearance is less than 20 cc/min. Your nephrologist will guide
you on timing.

A kidney transplant can help you get back to the routine you enjoyed prior
to becoming ill. Kidney recipients report feeling better, having more
energy, and enjoying the freedom from the dialysis schedule that dictated
their lives.

Whether you are pre-dialysis or have been on dialysis for several years,
transplant may be an option for you. We will carefully evaluate you to
see if transplant is what you need. Above all, we look out for your best
interest. Our goal is to provide you with the best possible care. In some
cases, that means not getting a transplant because the risks may be too high.

During the evaluation, you will have the opportunity to learn all about
transplant and get answers to all of your questions.

The first step is to
complete an application.

Pancreas Transplant

The pancreas is an organ with different functions. It produces insulin
as well as enzymes to help absorb nutrients from food.

Pancreas transplant is available to some people with Type I or Type II
Diabetes. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) dictates the criteria
for pancreas patients. A pancreas transplant requires a functioning kidney.
Some people receive a kidney and a pancreas at the same time, some a pancreas
after a kidney transplant, and some only need a pancreas.

The staff will evaluate you and your situation to see if a combined kidney-pancreas
transplant or a pancreas transplant alone is right for you. We will always
guard your safety and seek the best treatment option for you.
