Methodist Dallas Medical Center Joins SANE Initiative

Specialized Care for Sexual Assault Victims Now Available

Victims of sexual assault now have a place to turn to for specialized care in Southern Dallas County as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is introduced at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

The Methodist Dallas SANE program, located in the hospital’s emergency department, provides 24/7 rapid response by certified sexual assault nurse examiners who provide compassionate, confidential care and forensic examinations for sexual assault victims ages 14 and older. Out of 47 hospitals in Dallas County, Methodist Dallas is only the second to offer the SANE program and the first in Southern Dallas County.

April Box Chamberlain, CFRE, president and CEO, Methodist Health System Foundation, senior vice president of external affairs, Methodist Health System, says adding the SANE program at Methodist Dallas makes perfect sense. “This initiative certainly aligns itself well with the Methodist mission of improving and saving lives through compassionate quality health care. It’s a great fit for Methodist, SANE, and most importantly, the patients we will serve.”

The addition of the SANE program at Methodist Dallas was made possible by generous community support. Among those are The Dallas Foundation, $50,000; Mike and Mary Terry Foundation, $50,000; and Dallas Women’s Foundation, $29,000. Methodist is funding the health care personnel and facilities inside its emergency department.

The SANE Initiative was created by Safer Dallas Better Dallas (SDBD) as part of its commitment to making Dallas the safest city in America. Post-assault examination will be performed free at Methodist Dallas. Victims, friends, and family are also offered on-site support and advocacy services from The Turning Point, and non-profit rape crisis center that provides counseling, education, and advocacy to victims of sexual assault in North Texas.
