Sleep Studies at the Sleep Disorders Center at Methodist Richardson

Overnight sleep studies are conducted at the Methodist Richardson Sleep Disorders Center. Please read these frequently asked questions to help you prepare for the sleep study.

What should I bring the day of the test?

For the overnight study, patients should come prepared as they would for an overnight motel stay. If desired, patients may want to bring comfortable sleepwear, a pillow, reading materials, toothbrush, etc. Patients stay in their own private bedroom with a queen-size bed, restroom and television.

What should I do the day before to prepare?

Patients should consume their evening meal prior to arrival at the lab. Medications should be taken as prescribed, unless otherwise directed by a physician. All beverages and foods containing caffeine should be avoided after noon the day of the test. There should be no naps or alcohol consumption the day of the test.

How is the test conducted?

The technician in the testing area will attach monitoring devices to the patient. These devices are applied painlessly to the skin surface only (no needles are involved). The studies are monitored in an adjacent room, and the technician is readily available if needed. The study ends the next morning around 6:30 a.m.
