About Mark L. Shapiro, MD
Mark L. Shapiro, MD, FACS, is a board certified surgeon who specializes in trauma and critical care. With special interests in trauma, surgical critical care, and military medical training. Dr. Shapiro treats blunt and penetrating traumatic injuries, acute internal and abdominal wall hernias, visceral perforation and thoracic trauma, peritonitis, necrotizing soft tissue infections, and complicated diverticulitis.
Dr. Shapiro received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. He then earned his Medical Degree from Ross University School of Medicine at Rousseau, Dominica. Following graduation, Dr. Shapiro completed his General Surgery Residency at The Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati, OH, and pursued specialized training through a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Dr. Shapiro is passionate about finding new advancements to better care for his patients. He is a Site Reviewer for the American College of Surgeons providing evaluation and recommendations for the verification of trauma centers. He continues to support clinical research and education.
Dr. Shapiro also works closely with the Special Operation Combat Medics, which includes the Special Forces, Naval Special Warfare, and Marine Special Operation Command Medics. Dr. Shapiro routinely supports the U.S. Military by training the Ground Surgical Teams of the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio, Texas.
