Methodist Digestive Institute

Methodist Digestive Institute – A Hub for Digestive Health Services

If you suffer from a digestive disorder, you are not alone. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 60 to 70 million people suffer from digestive diseases. Because digestive diseases are complex, and symptoms are often subtle and gradual, sufferers commonly endure multiple doctor visits and undergo batteries of tests seeking relief.

A national leader in digestive healthcare, the Methodist Digestive Institute (MDI) at Methodist Dallas Medical Center brings together a multidisciplinary team of physicians, researchers, and health professionals to improve access to services and close the gap between symptom onset and successful treatment for digestive diseases. Furthermore, MDI is on the forefront of offering advanced technologies, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and incisionless treatment for acid reflux and achalasia.

Support Services

MDI’s support services exemplify the Methodist Health System core value of having a servant’s heart. By compassionately putting others first, we are constantly reminded that healthcare is not one-size-fits-all. It takes a listening ear and a servant’s heart to understand and meet the patient’s needs. Some of the ways we personalize care through support services include:

Nurse navigation for pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer patients
Nutrition counseling for Digestive Institute patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis
Pain management
Psychosocial services
Survivorship services

*An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

Quality Commitment

In addition to providing personal, multidisciplinary care and advanced technology, MDI works to enhance the health and well-being of patients through continuous quality improvement efforts. Among other things, quality improvement efforts increase providers’ knowledge and understanding of healthcare practices and their contribution to treating disease.

To this end, quality efforts for the year 2017-2018 are focusing on:

Evaluating ways to improve pain management for patients with pancreatic disease.

Working with Emergency Department providers to help identify and treat more quickly patients who present with symptoms of acute pancreatitis.

Developing care options that address cancer patients’ quality of life and bolster end-of-life planning services to patients and families.

Maintain Clinical Databases and Registries

National and internal clinical registries help doctors and researchers improve the quality and safety of the care they provide to their patients. MDI participates in this process by collecting and analyzing data on the progress of our patients in order to compare the effectiveness of different treatments for the same disease or condition, to evaluate different approaches to a procedure, or to see what factors influence patient experience. All patient information is blinded and aggregated to protect patient privacy. Some of the areas where MDI collects and studies patient data include:

ERCP and EUS procedures
Liver cancer
Minimally invasive liver resection (MILR) techniques
Pancreatitis
Pancreatic cancer
Y-90 treatment
