History

The Methodist Health System Family Medicine Residency Program is long established, founded in 1980 by Frank Crawford, MD and Allen Fain, MD. The residency was placed on the Methodist Charlton Medical Center campus, allowing it to be the sole training program at that hospital.

The program started with two residents and has grown to a complement of 18.

Accreditation

The Methodist Family Medicine Residency Program is accredited by both the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and has Osteopathic recognition. The program has received the ACGME's maximum accreditation cycles over the last 15 years.

Academics

Core lectures are provided to residents on a daily basis from faculty, specialists, and outside speakers in the Crawford Learning Center at Methodist Charlton. Interns have a procedural workshop every Wednesday afternoon on topics such as joint injections, central line insertions, and dermatologic procedures. At the same time, upper-level workshops focus on practice management, leadership skills, and preparation for job opportunities.

Board Preparation

Residents start preparing for their board examinations during their first year. This ongoing preparation has resulted in a 100 percent pass rate of those taking exams immediately after graduating for the past 10 years.

Procedural Competency

Resident physicians gain invaluable experience learning inpatient and outpatient procedures. There is a weekly procedure clinic in the Methodist Charlton Family Medicine Center supervised by our faculty. These procedures include:

  • Gynecologic – IUD insertion, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, and Nexplanon contraception
  • Musculoskeletal – musculoskeletal and joint injections
  • Dermatologic – skin biopsies, excisional techniques, and Botox injections

International Health

Thomas Shima, DO has led medical mission trips to Guatemala, Africa, and Peru. Resident physicians have the opportunity to learn about health problems, experience cultural diversity, and provide medical care in these countries under the supervision of the Methodist Family Medicine Residency Program faculty.

Geriatric Clinic

Residents work with our geriatrician in an outpatient clinic specifically for the olther patient. This occurs during the geriatric rotation, with a primary focus on memory loss pharmacotherapy, limitations in the elderly, and community resources. Residents also actively involved with "Generations", which provides health and education events for adults 55 and older.

Chronic Disease Management

The cornerstone of our residency program is ensuring our patients understand their health problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We have a full-time nurse educator that navigates patients through this process, which includes group visits and quality assurance.
