Methodist Health System Board of Directors Approves $135 Million Facility Expansion Plan
$108 million will fund unique trauma and critical care center at Methodist Dallas
08/23/2011

Methodist Health System today announced that the board of directors has approved a facility expansion plan exceeding $135 million that will directly benefit southwest Dallas County through renovations of its two existing hospital facilities – Methodist Dallas Medical Center and Methodist Charlton Medical Center.

"Southern Dallas is vital to the future growth of the City of Dallas and I applaud Methodist Health System for both its vision and commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens," stated Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. "The City of Dallas will greatly benefit from this essential expansion project and the services that Methodist provides."

As part of the facility expansion and renovation plan, Methodist Charlton Medical Center will invest $8.5 million to add 36 new patient care beds in the recently opened patient care tower, relocate the postcoronary interventional care unit  (PCIU) at a cost of $2.8 million to support expanded cardiology services, and spend $16 million to support the addition of a specialty care unit. The project will increase the hospital's overall operational bed capacity from 259 beds to 294 beds. Methodist Charlton will begin construction immediately with expected completion in fall 2012.

Methodist Dallas Medical Center will commit more than $108 million to expand its emergency, critical care, and surgery departments with a new six-story trauma and critical care center. The 248,000-square-foot trauma and critical care center will include 58 new emergency rooms, six trauma suites, eight surgical suites, a 36-bed critical care unit, and the ability to expand to 11 stories for future growth. Methodist Dallas expansion and improvements are scheduled to begin construction in early 2012 with completion in summer 2014.

Many health systems and hospitals across the country are reducing services and delaying expansion projects in preparation for expected reductions in reimbursements as a result of federal health care reform. "Federal health care reform legislation and reimbursement will certainly change the way health care is delivered in the future, and these plans take those changes into effect while also modernizing and transforming in areas that are currently reaching their  capacity," said John R. Ford, chairman of the Methodist Health System board of directors. He added that Methodist can only meet the critical community health care need in southern Dallas County through strong partnerships and a broad array of civic support. For that reason, he invites the community to take a major role in support of these much needed projects.

"We can only accomplish this essential goal with critical support from our city and philanthropy from our community leaders," said Ford. "Together we look forward to building the facilities the community desperately needs and deserves to meet the health care needs of the citizens of Dallas for many decades to come."

Methodist Dallas Medical Center is a 515-bed hospital located just south of downtown Dallas. The medical center serves as the teaching and referral center for Methodist Health System. Physicians trained at medical schools from across the United States and all over the world participate in Methodist Dallas' residency programs in internal medicine, general surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology. Designated as a Level II trauma center, Methodist Dallas is a crucial part of the Dallas County trauma plan. The hospital provides a high level of tertiary-care services, including adult trauma care, multi-organ transplant services, nationally rated high-risk infant care, and neuro-critical care. The hospital is a primary recipient of trauma occurring within southwest Dallas and the surrounding region, treating more than 1,500 trauma patients and over 60,000 emergency patients each year from a 150-mile radius. The hospital's existing 25,000-square-foot Emergency/Trauma Center was last renovated in 1999.

"As a safety-net hospital, providing high-level trauma and critical care to our community is part of our mission of service," said Stephen L. Mansfield, president and CEO of Methodist Health System. "As one of the primary providers of adult trauma care in Dallas, Methodist Dallas Medical Center has been a leader in pioneering intensive care and emergency services. This important expansion underscores our long-standing commitment to exceptional clinical services and facilities to support this important work."

Methodist Charlton Medical Center is a 309-bed general acute care and teaching hospital serving the suburban communities of southwest Dallas County. In September 2009, the hospital completed a $116 million renovation and expansion, adding a new patient bed tower, additional surgical services, and physician offices. The additional planned expansion will accomplish a number of objectives: the PCIU and additional telemetry beds will enable the facility to expand cardiology services to include open heart surgery, the increased bed capacity will improve emergency room wait times and serve even more patients in growing southwest Dallas County, and the new specialty care unit will contribute to Methodist Charlton's ability to provide for the full continuum of care for all patients.
