New Sleep Diagnostic Center Opens at Methodist Charlton Medical Center
05/20/2013

Sleep. We all need it. Yet 70 million Americans are estimated to suffer from sleep disorders, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Because of a lack of awareness, most people remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated. Sleep disorders have been linked to traffic accidents, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, memory loss, headaches, obesity, and other long-term side effects. In response to this critical health need, Methodist Charlton is proud to announce the opening of their new Sleep Diagnostic Center to serve adults and children. The Sleep Center is one of only a few in the southern Dallas County area.

Methodist Charlton Sleep Diagnostic CenterThe Sleep Center has two sleep-study suites specially designed to diagnose and evaluate sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, snoring, sleepwalking, and other sleep difficulties. Patients sleep in a private comfortable room in a hotel-like setting, with a private bath, cable television, wireless network, and contemporary furniture and linens.  For the patient, the sleep study is painless. Sensors are placed on the head and body for monitoring responses while the patient sleeps. A highly certified sleep technician monitors the patient throughout the night and is available for assistance if needed.

The study records the patient’s sleep patterns, breathing, muscle activity, heart rate, oxygen levels, and other functions. Following the sleep study, the referring physician receives the results and a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis of the patient’s sleep disorder.

“Poor sleep contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle,” says Methodist Charlton President Jonathan S. Davis, FACHE. “Our newest service will assist in the diagnosis and treatment for the growing number of people in our community who suffer from sleep disorders.”

The Sleep Center is open seven nights per week and sleep disorder testing is covered by most health insurance. To discuss sleep testing, patients should contact their physician, contact the Sleep Center directly at 214-947- 0575, or visit www.methodisthealthsystem.org/charltonsleepcenter.
