Methodist Health System honored four extraordinary nurses as initial recipients of The DAISY Award in a national program recognizing outstanding compassionate care in the nursing profession. Del Bacani, RN, Methodist Charlton; Tanya Davis, RN, Methodist Dallas; Ronda Higgins, RN, Methodist Mansfield; and Michelle Rivkin, RN, Methodist Richardson were honored with The DAISY Award for their extraordinary clinical skills and deeply compassionate actions.

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program established by the not-for-profit DAISY Foundation based in California as a  memorial to J. Patrick Barnes who died at age 33 from an autoimmune disease. The care he and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired creation of the foundation and award, which thanks nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

"All of these extraordinary nurses are role models for Methodist and are admired for their leadership and clinical expertise," Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Pamela Stoyanoff says. "They extend that same compassionate care and dedication to serve others in our communities and are well deserving of being named a DAISY nurse."

Nurses are nominated to receive The DAISY Award by recommendations received from a broad audience, including patients, family, community members, physicians, and staff colleagues. Methodist honorees are also evaluated and awarded by Methodist Health System's nursing administration. Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a ceremony and receives a commendation certificate, DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone African sculpture entitled, "A Healer's Touch."

Bacani is a compassionate caregiver to both patients and co-workers.  She takes time to get to know her patients and families, and provides compassionate, caring words of assurance to them.  She helps families and patients deal with end of life decisions and cares for those patients while also helping families through this difficult time in their lives.

Davis is always motivated to make a difference in the lives of her patients.  She is extremely flexible with her schedule and works days, evenings and night shifts when the need arises. She often makes special arrangements for her patients and as one example, coordinated helping a patient watch his granddaughters graduate in real time through an iPad when he was hospitalized.

Higgins is a charge nurse who lifts her patients' spirits. She accepts responsibility and delivers care with the highest integrity. She takes helpful initiatives, helps cultivate a culture of always doing the right thing at the right time, and reminds nurses how to make a difference in people's lives.

Rivkin is a charge nurse who is always a team player and goes above and beyond routine measures to ensure that patients receive the highest of care.  She often comes in on her day off to check on her patients and monitors issues from home when the need arises.

Bonnie Barnes, President and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Methodist Health System are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award."
