|Peggy Richey and Dan Harker
Peggy Richey, a 30-year cancer survivor, is fighting breast cancer for the third time. Her friend, Dan Harker, a fellow Keller Williams agent, recently competed in his first 70.3 Triathlon competition in Galveston. The triathlon is a 1.2-mile swim followed by a 56-mile bike ride followed by a 13.1-mile run. Yes, that's 70.3 total miles and 7 to 8 hours of constant movement.
While competing in an event like this is challenging, it's not nearly as difficult as Peggy's battle against cancer. Inspired by her perseverance, Dan wanted to help Peggy achieve her dream: giving back to two charities close to her heart that help cancer patients in need.
Methodist Richardson Cancer Center has been Peggy's home away from home since 2004. When her cancer returned, Peggy did her own research and found this to be the best place for the doctors and treatments she needed. They offer cutting edge technology such as: varian linear accelerator image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery, PET-CT imaging, MRI and breast MRI – just to name a few.
Donations to Peggy and Dan's fundraising will go directly into a program that funds free medicine and treatments to those patients who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford needed care. Cancer is very expensive to treat and all too often families can go bankrupt, or nearly so, while searching for a cure.
KWCares is a charity created to support Keller Williams Realty associates and their families with hardships as a result of a sudden emergency. In 2010, KWCares granted more than $1.5 million to associates. Many of those were facing serious medical illnesses and received financial assistance to help with co-pays and deductibles, medicines, therapies, and rehabilitation services not covered by medical insurance.
