Methodist Dallas Ranks in Top 10 U.S. News & World Report D-FW Hospitals
07/20/2011

Methodist Dallas Medical Center has been ranked in the top 10 medical facilities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region for 2011-2012, according to U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals D-FW metro area rankings in gynecology, urology, and nephrology (kidney disorders).

Methodist Dallas Medical Center has been ranked in the top 10 medical facilities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region for 2011-2012, according to U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals D-FW metro area rankings. There are also 20 physicians in 15 specialty areas affiliated with Methodist Health System who have been included in the list of U.S. News Top Doctors.

The best D-FW metro rankings recognize the 19 top performing hospitals in key medical specialties from among a total of 121 hospitals in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Methodist Dallas Medical Center met stringent benchmarks such as a minimum number of certain types of serious cases, and was recognized for high performance in the specialty areas of urology, gynecology, and nephrology (kidney).

Methodist Dallas Medical Center, one of Texas' leading teaching and referral hospitals, a full-service hospital in Oak Cliff in Dallas, Texas with an adult trauma emergency department, Level III NICU, Methodist Dallas Transplant Institute, Sam & Anne Kesner Heart Center, Methodist Brain and Spine Institute, da Vinci robotic surgery and more"This high ranking for top performance honors our commitment to quality, compassionate health care, and outstanding patient satisfaction," says Methodist Dallas Medical Center President Laura Irvine.  "We are proud of this achievement by our staff of dedicated professionals and pledge to continue our nearly century-long mission to save and improve the lives of those we are honored to serve."

U.S. News created the Best Hospitals in the nation recognitions 22 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, such as brain tumors typically considered inoperable and delicate pancreatic procedures. Latest rankings showcase 720 hospitals from among 5,000 nationwide which are among the country's top hospitals in at least one medical specialty and/or ranked among the best in their metro areas.

The new metro area rankings were created this year to recognize the most high-performing hospitals in 94 major metropolitan areas of the nation. Hospitals had to perform well in 16 varied specialties, including cancer and heart disease treatment, and respiratory disorders.

The regional hospital rankings complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The U.S. News metro rankings give many such patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network.

"These are hospitals we call 'high performers.' They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures," said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor.  "Almost every major metro area has at least one of these hospitals."

To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties. U.S. News ranked hospitals within all 52 U.S. metro areas with populations of 1 million or more, using existing data from 2010-11 Best Hospitals surveys.

The core mission of Best Hospitals is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. "These are referral centers where other hospitals send their sickest patients," said Comarow. "Hospitals like these are ones you or those close to you should consider when the stakes are high."
