Methodist Charlton Medical Center Designated Advanced Primary Stroke Center by American Stroke Association
01/11/2011

DALLAS – Methodist Charlton Medical Center recently received Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center following an on-site certification review from the Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies more than 18,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to improve outcomes for stroke patients. It is the best signal to the community that the quality care the hospital provides is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. The designation is also important in emergency services care as requirements expand to direct EMS to transport stroke patients to designated centers for stroke care. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards. The certification decision is based on the evaluation of standards, clinical practice guidelines, and performance measurement activities.

The Joint Commission surveyor had many positive comments during the review related to teamwork, physician leadership, nursing education, and clinical processes at Methodist Charlton Medical Center.

Methodist Charlton President Jonathan Davis thanked the Methodist Charlton staff for all their dedication and teamwork to improve and save lives through compassionate quality health care for the community. "I am truly proud and honored to work with so many talented individuals," he says.

According to the American Stroke Association:

  • About 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year
  • Every 40 seconds a person in the U.S. experiences a stroke
  • Over 4 million American adults live today with the effects of a stroke
