Extern, Intern, and Precept Programs
Extern, intern, and preceptor nursing programs
Methodist Health System has several programs to help nursing students and current RNs enrich their nursing education and experience. Use the links below to learn more about nursing externships, nursing internships, and nursing preceptor programs at Methodist Health System.
Working closely with local and regional nursing schools, the nursing extern program at Methodist Health System allows senior-level nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a real hospital setting. Depending on their area of interest and where they might like to work after graduation, externs may work in women’s services, labor and delivery, telemetry, intensive care, surgery, emergency, or other areas.
The Methodist externship program began in 2002. Since then, it has grown from 10 to more than 100 participants. Junior-level nursing students can get started early by signing up for our patient care technician program. For more information about the nursing externship program at Methodist Health System, call us at 214-947-1550.
The nursing internship program at Methodist Health System is growing quickly. Sixty-six percent of our externs stay with us for internships.
Through a relationship with the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Texas at Tyler, Methodist became the first private hospital in Dallas to offer college credit for nursing internships. We have nurse intern positions in the operating room as well as medical/surgical, critical care, postpartum, and neonatal intensive care areas. All nursing internships are approved for three credit hours toward an undergraduate or master’s level degree.

Preceptors are experienced Methodist nurses who offer several months of one-on-one coaching and mentoring to nursing interns, including establishing and documenting specific educational goals.
RNs who wish to become preceptors must go through special training. Methodist is planning an online preceptor course in cooperation with the University of Texas at Tyler. For more information about precepting at Methodist Health System, call us at 214-947-1550.
